Napomena: | Summary |
Sažetak: | The plurality of 15th and 16th century Croatian love lyrics : The love lyric is one of the best represented and most important genres in Renaissance Croatian literature. Yet literary histtoriography has often wrongly seen all of it as poetically homogeneous or monotonous. Literary historians would notice one element of an author's poetics and overgeneralize it, leaving out of account the layered nature of the lyrics they studied. Rather than uncritically and in toto defining the Renaissance Croatian love poets as Petrarchists, we should consider the various discourses of love in their lyrics. In addition to Petrarchism, these include, at the very least, the medieval semantics of courtly love, a hedonistic love doscourse (most often Classical origin), and Neoplatonism. The basic realization of the pluralism of amorous viewpoints is here applied to the entire oeuvres of the most important authors, isolating their distinctive characteristics. These are the works of Šišmundo Menčetić, Džore Držić, Hanibal Lucić, Marin Držić, Nikola Nalješković, Dinko Ranjina, Dominko Zlatarić, and Horacije Mažibradić. The popularity of love lyrics in Renaissance Croatian literature and the differences among their authors should not be explained exclusively by the strong literary influences coming from the other shore of the Adriatic, but also by their connections with other cultural practices and social facts. On the one hand, love poems functioned as general and standardized patterns for exploring the intimate sphere. They could satisfy not only literary criteria but also the need for introspective work of self-discovery, a need which had become acute at a time of increased individualization. On the other hand, the Dubrovnik republic's vertically-oriented social and political power structure is reflected in the adoption of particular conceptions of love and its relationships. Plebians became more inclined to idealistic discourses of love, repression of sexuality, the experience of unrequited love, while the nobility leaned toward alternative, competing conceptions, in which the lover gains more autonomy and ceases to be a toy in the hands of love. |

Sažetak: | In search of the Krsnik and Benandante : The article examines traditions of the Krsnik/Kersnik in Istria and related, particulary Balkan, figures, mostly using reports from the 19th and 20th centuries. It compares them with the Friulian Benandante in legal trials in the 16th and 17th centuries (following the work of Carlo Ginzburg). Great similiraties are found between the Benandante and the Krsnik in particular, but also some differences. The functions of all the figures treated show partly shamanistic features. The Krsnik of Benandante struggles against evil Štrigon from another place in order to defend the harvest in his home locality. there are indicators that these antagonists were originally homogeneous, similar figures. Alongside the "shamanistic" or "ecstatic" theory, the articla considers the "mythological" theory, according to which the Krsnik/Kersnik would have evolved from the ancient Slavic god Perun. At the end of the article, the author reflects on the hostility between the Krsnik and the Štrigon, these opposing yet similar figures, and on "ours" vs. "theirs" - an opposition which recurs in very bizarre forms even today. |

Sažetak: | Science, space, time: outlines of a (Croatian) 'literary anthropology) : Literary anthropology is a relatively new terminological syntagm, which grew out of the recent tendency to establish hybrid disciplinary practices. Its field of interest partly converges with that of folklore literary criticism, a discipline which is itself processual not only due to the literary "tradition" as its subject, but also due to the changes within its methodological tradition. Croatian folkloristics has for a long time cultivated a rather ambivalent relationship towards literary anthropology, although it had simultaneously - almost unwillingly - offered a relevant referential framework to this unstable but intriguing field. Namely, through its numerous and important incursions into the interpretation of the so-called "high-low" culture, as well as its recent problematization of borders between the oral and the written literary corpus, it joined the concomitant contributions to the deconstruction of the opposition between the text and the context, parallelly flourishing in the Croatian ethnology. |

Sažetak: | Imaginary geographies of exile: Berlin and rijeka as fictional toponyms in the prose of Dubravka Ugrešić and Daša Drndić : this text analyses two novels, 'Museum of unconditional surrender' by Dubravka Ugrešić and 'Leica format' by daša Drndić, and the way two cities anre represented in them, Berlin and rijeka, seen from the special sight line of the emigrant/newcomer. Regarding exile as a sort of travel/displacement which radically calls into question the established frameworks of sameness and difference, the analysis points to the process of fictionalizing immediate reality as one of the significant implications of an exile's experience. Thus the cities where exiles dwell can, from the viewpoint of the characters themselves, appear as simultaneouosly real and fictional spaces. The exile situation intensifies the subject's need to speek (always unsuccessfully) to establish a new, stable refuge as a new Sameness, or at least to create an illusion of the possibility of establishing one.Hence, in both novels, the postmodern state of exile is set against a modern city. In 'Museum of unconditional surrender' this is Berlin as Lehan's "city of the artist", while in 'Leica format' it is Rijeka as Lehan's "city of the crowd". |

Sažetak: | Slavenka Drakulić's 'Divine hunger': imaginary realization of the (im)possible : This essay is an analysis of 'The taste of man' (original title 'Božanska glad'), a novel by the Croatian novelist Slavenka Drakulić, against its background, Peggy Sanday's anthropological study of cannibalism 'Divine hunger'. Within the theoretical framework of Wolfgang Iser's literary anthropology the author follows the general tenets developed by Lévi-Strauss and Peggy Sanday as well as on two levels: on one the novel deals with the deeply rooted human problem of individuality and identity and an attempt to solve it through the cannibalistic act of fusion with the other. On the other, more intimate level, in this reading it is not an erotic fantasy, but a moralistic story with a solution dictated by Drakulić's protagonists' historical cultural background. |

Sažetak: | Writing about another, writing abouot oneself ('Marina or on biography' by Irena Vrkljan) : Since 'Marina or on biography' is first and foremost an attempt to describe the life of the Russian poet Marina Cvetaeva, I have concentrated my analysis most of all on Irena Vrkljan as biographer. I have called her story-telling model of which proceeds in time, starting from her birth and ending with her death; rather, it moves before us as the heroine shifts from one geographical point to another, resembling a voyage not only metaphorically but also in the literal meaning of the word. The breakdown of the chronological principle, in any case, leads to our perceiving the changes in the Russian poet's life much more in a spatial than in a remporal frame of reference. In the second part of the study, I consider tha utobiographical component of Vrkljan's work. The significant distinction of the autobiographical in it, as compared to the biographical, is that the idea of development is not rejected along with the crhonology. That is, while we perceive Cvetaeva as a more or less constant, static figure, we can follow Vrkljan both in her motion through various spaces in her internal development. As she searches for her personal identity, she changes precisely along the dimension of time. Hence we cannot term her life story, by analogy with Marina's, an "autogeography", since in the formation of the story the category of time is not pushed into the background vis-a-vis the category of space. |

Sažetak: | Historia magistra vitae: Ivan Aralica and the exemplary (hi)story : The article interprets the reaffirmation of the 'roman a these' in Ivan Aralica's work, in a time when the historical novel worldwide is dominated by a postmodernist "historiographical metafiction", as a defense mechanism against the self.problematization of novelistic discourse, one which brings out the eclipsed didactic "prehistory" of the novel. As studies show, the exemplary (hi)story, defending an individual or collective identity, is generally the fruit of exacerbated conditions of crisis. But the moralistic basis of the novelistic story, after the experience of Realism and Modernism, has lost the self-evident quality it had in the 18th century, so Aralica defends it by mulitplication against possible resistances. The article, taking the examples of 'Put bez sna', 'Duše robova', and particulary 'Psi u trgovištu', analyzes this almost instinctive copying of an extradiegetic pedagogical stance on various intradiegetic levels. Our thesis is that the endless framing of the story, in an attempt to stablizie the message or moral, leads in the end to its manifold evaporation. |

Sažetak: | Bitter, green, fabricated: borders and histories in Ivan Slamnig's 'Better part of valour' : Ivan Slamnig's 'Better part of valour' (1972) is a novel characterized by a continous interaction of its narrative present tense and an inserted pseudohistorical story, modeled on 19th century Croatian fiction. While the narrative present tense is oriented towards current international cultural concepts and historical analysis, the inserted pseudo-historical story - shich permeates and often conditions the principal narration - is characterized by the domestic and the local. This brings the legacies of the domestic and the local back to the very project that sought to separate and analyze them, legitimizing the assumption that analysis and communality act as mutually defining concepts. As a result, 'Better part of valour' itself acts as an invitation to discuss the possible advantages of literary anthropology in the context of Croatian cultural and literary history. |

Sažetak: | "The fraction man": anthropology of 'Cyclops' : The reading of narrative texts is predicated upon the problem of the construction of a "man made of words", a set of verbal and anthropological representations constituting an undecidable boundary between the conception of literary character as a rhetorical function of discourse, i.e. enunciation, on one hand, and as object of a referential fallacy based on the procedure of favouring the semantic "content" of the fictional statement at the expense of the discursive tissue, on the other. The interpretation of the novel 'The Cyclops' (1965) by Croatian author Ranko Marinković proposed in the paper conosiders the possibility of analysing the text of the novel in the light of Barthes's view that "the text has a human shape, it is a form, an anagram of the body". The methodology is that of Lacan's psychoanalitic semiotics, which, starting from de Saussure's structuralist model of the sign, fuses in the concept of signifier the question of the visual, mimetic, and specular construction of the body-image and of its problematic readability. The relation of the text to the issue of intertextuality is thus seen as being analogous to that of the human subject to the problem of intersubjectivity, or, in Girard's terms, of the individual to the notion of "interdividuality", engaging the related metaphors of anthropology, blindness and/or impaired vision, and the dividing phallomorphic gaze. |

Sažetak: | The hyperbolic discourse on the avant-garde : The article seeks to show that hypercole as an intensifier and modifier of meaning affects all levels of artistic discourse. Hyperbolically structured discourse uses all available rhetorical means and newly created combinations of them, as well as promotion of themes and motifs in a way hitherto unthinkable in literature. The hyerbolism of the avant-garde is connected to the idea of creating a new art which will not resemble anything previouis, and to the idea of leaps and revaluations in favor of a radically new future. |

Sažetak: | Types of the modern subject: men with female gender characteristics : The article starts out from a culturological standpoint according to which the subject is not an ontological given but a cultural product, i.e., a social construct. In the system of modern culture three series of subjects are distinguished: ruling subjects, coountersubjects and nonsubjects. Modern artists are treated as the central countersubjects, and one of their manners of forming their oppositional identities - besides infantilism and orientation to other cultures - is a symbolic feminization. Six types of symbollically androgynous modern artists are analyzed: the 'genius' (a man with feminine traits of irrationality, chaos and folly), the 'Dandy' (an urbane semioticized man), the 'Bohemian' (male revolt from a feminine marginal social position), the 'flaneur' (feminine fragmentary perception), the 'übermensch' (avant-garde genius - a mixture of "male" will for power and "female" chaos and folly), and, finally, Musil's 'Möglichkeitsmensch' (ambivalent man, who like a girl cannot make any firm decision or establish a firm identity, e.g. Krleža's Filip Latinovicz). At the end, the difference between modern essentialist and postmodern ludistic identity formation is treated. |

Napomena: | Summary |
Sažetak: | Elevation and ectasy in Krleža's early works: the dance as a symbol : The object of our examination is the remarkable frequenca of metaphors from the area of dancing or the direct appearance of dance scenes and motifs in some works by the young krleža - from the early verses to 'Kraljevo'. Differences in the writer's stylistic procedures, whish are noticed particulary on the way from the almost inflated use in the 'Simfonije' to the specific dramaturgic inclusion of dancing in the one-act 'Kraljevo', are an indicator of the personal development of his creative tendencies, but also an index of stylistic commonalty in the European literatures in the period from the Sezession to Expressionism. In the consonance of stylistic and world-view categories, a key figure if Friedrich Nietzsche, who in several of his works, particulary in the prose poem 'Also sprach Zarathustra', is an aerly advocate of seeing the dance as one of the universal anthropological symbols. Concepts like elevation and ecstasy, derived from Nietzsche's texts, became categories of creative poetics, but also of critical interpretation of modern literature and visual arts, around the turn of the century. Krleža's 'maskerata' is an excellent example of the reception of Nietzsche's works in Central European literature. Finally, deserving of special attention is the comparison between 'Maskerata' and 'Kraljevo' from the point of view of the central theme of the contribution. |

Sažetak: | Displacement of the subject as a motif in early 20th century Croatian lyric poetry : The article treats several Croatian lyric poems from the first three decades of the 20th century which have in common that the speaking subject displaces himself or is displaced in favor of some external, transsubjective entity: nature, life in the abstract, the masses, or a machine. Before the analysis proper, a short definition of the topic is given vis-s-vis the current approach to the problem of subjectivity and personal identity, the purpose being to determine what influence the world.views typical of eras of estheticism and the avant-garde (dualistic spiritualism, Sezession-era vitalism, avant-garde physicalism) had on the placement of the speaking subject of the lyric poem. |

Napomena: | Summary |
Sažetak: | Arcanizaton of knowledge in fantastic fiction : The Romantic and Postromantic literature of the fantastic frequently takes refuge to arcane knowledge in order to construe the enigmatic, uncanny and marvellous nucleus of the plot. Arcane knowledge such as alchemy, mesmerism, free masonry etc. finds its counterpart in knowledge resulting from disciplines which developed their scientific profile (more or less) in accordance with elightenment such as psychology, physiology, medicine etc. Being inaccessible because of its scientific specificity and exclusivity that requires a high level of understanding this knowledge acquires a certain aura of mystery and horror, which leads to its being perceived in the tradition of the arcane. Thus authors of the fantastic, responding to the new psychological theories of biogenetic experiments with animals and humans, expose the inquieting or awe inspiring aspects of these disciplines. However, by reversing scientific into parascientific 'data' placing them in a 'unenlightened' atmosphere, they react to the challenge of 'modern science' and the hubris of its representatives. The narrator tells about scandalous or bizarre psychotechnical and physiotechnical experiments withthe human being. The crossing of borders (between life and death, Poe; between human and animal creatures; Wells, Bulgakov; between dream and reality, Gjalski; between two individuals, Wilde), and the transformation of the human being by human interference (influence, vivisection, transplantationary operations) seem to deny all anthropological assumptions. |

Sažetak: | On the globalization of the space of Croatian literature : The macrospace which Croatian literature shaped in the 19th century seems to be connected to the text of Mihanović's poem 'Croatian homeland', which later became the national anthem of Croatia. This is the partoral river region of nothern Croatia, but with a call to arms which referred to the region on the other side of the River Una. Bosnia held by the Ottomans. This frontier space, beginning with the travel writings of Matija Mažuranić and continuing up to Kumičić's text 'Under the gun', constantly attracted Croatian writers. On the other hand, Croatian literary figures frequently touched upon the Venetian cultural space (Nemčić's travel writing) or the "Carniolan" Alps in the West (Šenoa's 'Wanderung'), while the center of the Monarchy appears only in later vojnović's Viannese pieces and the modernist Nehajev's 'great city'. the Croatian literature that developed on the shores of the adriatic in the 19th century only sporadically treated maritime themes. The process of globalization of Croatian literature begins with Matoš's reportages from the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1900, but also with the hypnagogic poetics of his 'Mora' (Nightmare). Krleža in his "expressionistic phase", champions a global view, but the visual field of his novels narrows for a number of Juević's poems, which form "zones" (Apollinaire's notion) of the world space. The dramatist Josip Kosor, known as a rural (sic) "expressionist", in his 1920's plays places a long series of figures from the world artistic avant-garde in famous Montmartre cafes at a time of ruthless panetration of American capital. A global view is, further, significant for a number of lyrical texts by the theather scholar and travel writer Slavko Batušić in the 1930s. |

Sažetak: | What dio our ancestors eat?: cuisine inthe older Kajkavian drama : the article treats the image of food and its sociological and nutritional aspects in Zagreb and nothern Croatia at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. Our scopus consist of two comedies by Tituš Brezovački (Zagreb 1757 - zagreb 1905): 'Matijaš grabancijaš dijak' (1804) and 'Diogeneš' (2805), and several anonymous works, particulary 'Mislibolesnik iliti Hipokondrijakuš' (1808). These plays offer an abundance of material on the everyday life of the time, with food occupying a central place. The writers look at it only in part from a gastronomic standpoint: they consider various manners of eating from what we would today call a nutritional viewpoint. As men of the Enlightenment, they seek to persuade their audience of the advantages, the "strenght of body and heart", that come from, as we would say, a 'healthy diet'. Frech cheese, onions and wine in small wuantities, the fare of the 'purgeri', are favored over the culinary delicacies that only the higher social strata can afford. The image of food in the older Kajkavian comoedies is also an image of differing mentalities, and has the value of a sort of anthropological or civilizional badge of identity within the society ot the time. In this specific view of the best of the Kajkavian comedies, the abundant cuisine of some and the frugal eals of others, the insatiable gourmands over agianst the temperate, rational consumers of 'homely victuals', offer us a picture of longago Zagreb and nothern Croatia just at the moment when we are threatened by a 'hamburgerization' of Europe which, culinarly speaking, erases all national gastronomic distinctions. |

Sažetak: | Traces of a frontier mentality in Grabovac's 'Flower of conversation' : Filip Grabovac in one of the better-studied Croatian writers of the early modern period; his life and works have been the topic of two scholary symposia and three monographs. His only work, 'The flower of conversation of the Illyrian or Croatian people and language', an anthologistic work combining prose with verse and religious with secular topics, has mostly been interpreted by literary historians by means of the notions 'Enlightenment' (a Croatian of Eastern European version imbued with a conservative Christian ideology). 'Counter-reformation/ Catholic Revival' (especially because of his intolerant attitude toward non-Catholics), and 'folk literature' (the implied reader as a member of the lower, less educated social classes). In this study, the author has sought to indicate some parts of 'Flower of conversation' that cannot be explained only by the notions cited, and which particulary bring out Grabovac's interest in the past of the region and his acceptance of values (ideologemes) and means of expression typical of the oral tradition of his implied readers. These parts, against the background of Grabovac's biography and with the help oof historiographic literature, published archival sources and some hitherto largely unstudied literary texts temporally and spatially close to Grabovac'sworks (chronicles of Franciscans in Makarska), are here explained as an expression of one variant of the early modern frontiersman mentality of the Dalmatian hinterland (the broad region of origin for Grabovac). This mentality, arising in a region of frequent wars, migrations and lawlessness, is characterized by the acceptance of patriarchal values immanent, for example, in the folk epics (celebration of border wars and banditry as a form of heroism, antifeminism) and by marked intolerance toward Other (the Turks of Moslems, the Orthodox, and even Catholics from neighboring regions: those from Sinj, in the case of Grabovac). |

Sažetak: | Dubrovnik: an open and closed city : The cultural space of the Republic of Dubrovnik in the early modern period - unlike other parts of the Croatian lands (Venetian Dalmatia, inland Croatia and Turkish-controlled Croatia) - absorbed and accepted the most important characteristics and stimuli of the dominant poetic programs of contemporary Western europe, and rapidly imitated and applied them in its own literature, beginning with Humanism and the Renaissance and continuing to Classicism and Pre-romanticism. Hence literary historians in their descriptions and interpretations have perceived and evaluated the Dubrovnik segment of Croatian literary production as the highest achievement in the early modern period and as the best proof for the membership of Croatian literature in hte Western European cultural complex. Historiographic views of the political-historical fortunes and significance of the Republic of Dubrovnik within the national space have, ever since the time of the Croatian Cational Revival, upheld and idealized image of the great achievements of Dubrovnik literary culture, thus generating numerous ideologemes and mythologemes important for the national identity. However, while the image and idea of Dubrovnik literary culture as an exemplary esthetic achievement is largely undisputable, the vision of literary culture in the small autonomous aristocratic republic as harmonious, integrated, freedom-loving and democratic can be questioned. Literary works have perserved many voices challenging the conception of Dubrovnik as a harmonious and integrated space. Numerous examples show that the City was also the scene of other voices, antagonistic to the dominant ideology and Weltanschauung, attesting to social and political tensions within society. Such discordant tones arise most often from the citizenry, not infrequently from the clergy, and sometimes even from contentious particians. They never come from members of the lowest social strata or marginal ethnic groups, nor from women, since all of there were doomed to silence. |

Sažetak: | The profile of the "killer" in three Doubrovnik Renaissance tragedies : This article examines the ways in which violence, murder and bloodshed are re/presented in renaissance tragedy - especially in three Renaissance tragedies written by three Dubrovnik dramatists, Marin Držić (Hekuba), Fran Lukarević Burina (Atamante) and Sabo Gučetić Bendevišević (Dalida). The analysis focuses on four key issues: first, the strong influence of the roman dramatist Seneca on Renaissance tragedy in general and especially on the above-mentioned Croatian dramatists; second, the functions of scenes of violence in these Croatian tragedies; third, the ways these scenes from the profile of the "killer"; finally, their ambition to describe (create) deep psychological profiles of each tragic character. Seneca's influence is considered very potent, not only on the level of tragic dramaturgy - but also in creating interesting dramatic characters, totally different from their classical tragic ancestors. |

Sažetak: | Two hermits : The articles compares two lenghty poems by Vetranović which both carry the title 'remeta' 'The hermit'. we find that one of them portrays the institution of ascetic life from a serious perspective, the other froma comic one. The viewpoint in these texts determines the relationship to reality (social and material), the relationship to tradition, and a number of other elements. The hermits portrayed are simultaneously very similar and very different. Taking into account the fact that the author himself lived for a time as hermit, we conclude that the choice of the two perspectives is the fruit of the manneristic period in which Vetranović was writing. |

Sažetak: | One of the approaches to the second sex in three acts. A kaleidoscope of female images in 15th and 16th century Dubrovnik : Juxtaposing data from Dubrovnik studies based on archival material and Dubrovnik narrative sources, the paper points to the complexity of that urban community's cultural horizons during the 15th and 16th century with a special focus on women's history. there exist parallel, diverse frames of reference within which women's lives were conceptualized - legal, economic, social and cultural, ecclesiastic, humanistic. They were not mutually exclusive, and therefore they created a plurality of opinions, dialectics, ambivalence, non-consistency and conflict within the community. This shapes the complexity of the conceptual, value-judgmental and interpretative scope for research into various issues related to women such as understanding their role, conceptions about the female character and body, and about femininity. At the intersection of literary anthropology, cultural anthropology, and historical anthropology approaches, some basic problems are discussed, namely the notion of historical source, the capacity of interdisciplinary research, as well as the production and legitimacy of scientific knowledge. |

The intention is to explore the effect of these changes of place and the times in which they were written and published, however, these four books remain intimately connected with Croatia. But, whereas the early works, those written before 1991, look out at the rest of the world from the perspective of an 'insider' with an intimate knowledge and understanding of her surroundings, the later ones are shaped by the perceptions of an 'outsider' in her new context, looking back to Croatia with complex feelings of loss and alienation. |
