Sažetak:This article probes the essence of such phenomena as concept and symbol, considers the dialectic of their stability and variability, and traces the development of content in some of them. Archetypes, stereotypes, and conceptual value are identified as the entities that are responsible for the universality of concepts and symbols, and that provide the stable 'kernels0 of their content, which resist changes happening in them over time. Finally, the article expands on the main factors bringing about these changes - intertextuality and deconstruction, and offers a case study of the deconstruction of the Soviet ideological model during the 'Perestroika' of the 1990s.

Sažetak:This articla presentd different semiotic perspectives on biological mimicry, which is considered to be a communicative system consisting of a mimic, a model, and a signal-receiver. Proceeding from the writings of Thomas A. Sebeok, the activity of the mimic and the relationship between mimicry and iconicity are analyzed. From the signal-receiver's perspective, mimicry is described as a probable mistake in recognition and it is characterized by the notion of ambivalent sign. Ambivalent sign is a stable sign structure fluctuating between one and two signs. On the basis of Jakob von Uexküll's eorks, mimicry resemblance is described as taking place in animal 'Umwelten'. From this semiotic viewpoint, various examples of abstract resemblance in nature are regarded as 'resemblance with meaning' and an alternative explanation to the concept of abstract mimicry is presented.

Sažetak:This paper analyzes a televised politica advertisement run by David Perryman against former Congressman J. C. Watts in the 1944 Fourth District Congressional race in Oklahoma. Relying on Roland' Barthes' conception of the rhetoric of the image - what I refer to as critical semiotics - the paper investigates the four sign system at work in the ad: photographs, written language, spoken language (narration), and moving images. The analysis demonstrates: how the sponsor of the ad uses the trope of the 'Afro' as the primry signifying image, that the ad argues against Watts' candidacy by implicitly appealing to audience members' (voters') negative associations of blackness with inferiority, criminality, and perceptions o black militancy associated with the black power movement.

Sažetak:In this paper, we examine the importance of hyperlings in revealing the presence of the hypertext author and his decisive role in defining and controlling the dialogue with the user/reader through the hypertext. This is essential in order to adequately describe all the factors involved in hypertexxtual communication and how this communication takes place. In hypertests and hypermidia, hyperlinks on the one hand define the possible directions of hypertextual communication and, on the other hand, their strategy of manifestation shapes the user's process of interpretation. Because of these two important 'powers' hyperlinks have, and on the basis of John Searls's distinction between constitutive and regulative rules, hyperlinks can be difined as constitutive rules of hypertextual communication, set by the author, needing to be activated by the reader, and determining different utterances in the interaction happening during the navigation between thea uthor and the user/reader.

Sažetak:This article explores from a semiotic perspective the structural features of the 'poetic logic' that lies behing metonymy and metaphor. More specifically, it treats metonymy and metaphor as 'abnormal' uses uf language but as the results of the same ndexical and iconic ways of thinking that we see elsewhere in our lives. The paper also brings to bear on the topic of metaphor some important insights from the late Chinese scholar Quian Zhongshu, whose 'two handles and several sides' theory of metaphor seems to complement contemporary Western 'metaphorology' very well.

Sažetak:The objectice of this article is to contribute to the understanding of the functional specialization of languages. It offers a logical-functional perspective on the tropic by establishing correspondences between the theories of three scholars: Peirce, Santaella, and Halliday. Through both an analysis of visual examples and a dsicussion of the literature, it proposes that the sonorous, the visual, and the verbal, in deep association with human senses, have evolved as specialized matrices mainly to fulfill interpersonal, ideational, and textual semiotic functions, respectively.

Sažetak:This paper synthesizes and extends all previous acounts of filmic montage made within the broadly Metzian semiotic tradition in order to demonstrate that the semiotic of film and of verbal language share major features of their organization. Drawing on recent advances in formal and functional linguistic discourse semantics, the paper provides an analysis scheme that supports a film-as-discourse perspective along both the syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes of semiotic description. Previous approaches are shown to have been restricted to views of compositional semantics only appropriate for syntax. This has compromised their effectiveness for providing an appropriate empirical basis for investigating film.

Sažetak:This article attempst to clarfiy Derrida's notion of écriture and to show, through a close reading of three lectures on literary figures (Valéry, Ponge, Joyce), how he puts theory into practice. Saussure thought that linguistics would be a branch of semiology, a general theory of signs and signification. His conventional logocentric privileging of speaking over writing was the initia step on the road that made phonology the dominant discipline within the science. Linguists and philosophers have trivialized, ignored, and repressed the other epistemological path, that of grammatology. Derrida's field of analytical inquiry (the signing of signs or 'signs' as both noun and verb), includes semiology in an even more general theory of signifying practices (oral communication, mathematics, painting, philosophy, history, literatrue, etc), since writing and the written are the conditions of their very existence. They all depend on inscription because cultural transmission requires repeatybiliy, duplication, reproducibility, etc. Yet without soiken language could not be described and linguistics would not exist. Neither would 'culture' in general.

Sažetak:Tha aim of this article is to discuss the relationship between experiences with drugs and musical/visual experiences using a socio-semiotic theoretical framework. In recent collective research still underway, this topic is already being explored in many directions: first, by showing how sensorial alterations caused by drugs are 'translated' into different texts of pop culture, such as songs, video clips, movies, etc.; second, by reconstructing the themes and motivations of many subcultures (hippie, psychodelic, punk) that originated on the basis of an alteration of the senses achieved through the simultaneous use of mucis and drugs; finally, by proposing some formal similiraties - and possible shifts - between music and drug experiences. In particular, I propose a comparative analysis of four texts that describe different processes of alteration by referring to different drugs: synthetics in 'A clokwork orange' by Burgess and Kubrick; hashish in 'Uccelli da gabbia e da voliera' by de Carlo; cocaine in 'Bright lights, big city' by McInerey, and alcohol in 'Tratado sobre la resaca' by Bas. What matters in this comparison is that although they talk about different suvstances, all of these texts end up proposing, each one in a different way, types of paradigmatic and wyntagmatic relations between substances that transcend the substantialistic and traditionalistic distinction between these drugs.

Sažetak:This paper presents the notion that a metaphor is one of the discursive tools whereby pwople position themselves with regard to a change process. Based on Sebeok and Danesi's theory, I analyze two 'root' metaphors (articulated by an interviewee) to illustrate the assumption of pisitions and counterppositions and the way metaphors mediate this positioning. The paper suggests that in the specific context of organizational change, positioning plays the social role of denoting for people (who are considered members of this new social experience) the expected modes of behavior.

Sažetak:Three basic semiotic modes are presented that whow an increasing number of referential relations: passive semiosis (monadic semiotic mode), active production of a sign referring to a state of the utterer (dyadic semiotic mode), and active reference to an external event or object for a partner (triadic semiotic mode). Symbolic systems arise when the third semiotic mode is combined with a combinatorial principle typical of information processing. Symbols are not directly representational, sind they do not show the associative relation typical of the first two semiotic modes. The brain is not able, with its intrinsic resources, to give rise to a symbolic system, but needs external, physical units (phonemes, gestures, and so on) to be combined to form communicative structures as sentences and discourses. These units are botj discrete and codifed. Nonhuman primates' inability to possess a true language is due, at least in part, to their failure to discover the principle ot combination. Symbolic systems may have arisen phylogenetically in close connection with cooperation for tool making.

Sažetak:This study explores how continuity is essential to the precess of social discourse and specifically focuses on its application as a communication strategy used by writers for 'The daily whow with Jon Stewart' on the Comedy Central television network. The concept of continuity is central to making individual experiences meaningful through social doscourse. Broadcast journalists contribute to social doscourse by using words, sounds, and images to represent stories about events that happened to toher people, at other times, and in other places. As young people watch late night comedy shows such as 'The daily show' for information about news and politics, they must recognize the meanings of sings that refer to past events and people from remote locations. This essay demonstrates how 'The daily show' writers effectively inform an audience that lacks historical perspective about public affairs and politics and is primarly interested in being entertained.

Sažetak:Neither reality nor language is genuinely objective; rather, both the interpretation of reality and the use uf language to create and manipulate reality represent a subjective understanding of both. This paper esamines the role of language in creating, representing, and manipulating realities, using the 2003 German movie 'Good Bye, Lenin!' as a vivid and striking illustration of the role of language in constructing alternate realities. When the protagonist's mother, a committed East German socialist, awakes from the coma she entered after a heart attack on the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the doctors warn her son that any shoch could kill her. In order to prevent his mother from learning of the demise of her beloved socialist Germany, Alex manipulates the reality of post-wall East Berlin to match his mother's (perceived) reality of an earlier socialist East Berlin. In so doing, Alex makes the viewer question what reality is and how reality can be constructed and manufactured. There is no absolute objective reality, butonly realities based upon the beliefs and preconcepts of participants, which may be and often are, manipulated by the use of language in the presentation of 'facts'.

This paper will analyze an aspect of The Matrix trilogy promotional campaign (1999-2003) focusing on the interplay between verbal and visual semiotics through a select corpus of posters. The method of analysis will be based both on the grammar of visual design developed by Kress and van Leeuwen, and on the Hallidayan model of analysis. The Matrix movies are set in a present (not future) 'real' world that is actually 'fiction of science', rather than a science fiction vision of a future reality. They are based on the idea of a very fuzzy border between real and virtual reality, which has become a major issue in these last fifteen years due to the advent of the internet and the fast growing number of internet users all over the world. This analysis will show how posters encode different kinds of promotional messages according to the social impact of each movie.

Sažetak:Mirth is a central feature of our experience of literature and related arts. This essay considers the nature and irigins of mirth. It begns with a suggestion by Greimais regarding the structure of jokes. Greimas's view dovetails nicely with empirical research ov the neurobiology that underlines our appreciation of humor, in particular the generation of meaning in the right hemisphere of the brain. The essay turns from h+this research to a componential analysis of emotion, considering what elements must enter into a cognitive account of an emotion. Ideally, such an account will include systemic / functional, neurobiological, and evolutionary components. Moreover, it is crucial to distinguish between the mechanisms produced by evolution and the reproductive functions that those mechanisme approximate. Having treated some of the neurobiological material, the essay takes up the systemic /functional aspect of mirth. Specifically, it argues that mirth is produce by particular practices (including right hemisphere meaning generation) that are characteristic of children when they are striving to acomplish tasks beyond their developmental leel. Even in cases where mirth is distinctly 'adult' (e.g., in obscenity), the mechanism is comprehensible in evolutionary terms as it fosters bonding and an appropriate degree of attention to children.

Sažetak:This paper investigates the classical issue of 'point of view', but from a cognitive stance. Under hte headling of 'enunciation', the paper argues that the cognitive linguistic tradition may prpvide a better understanding of the fiction in particular. The paper introduces the contributions of Leonard Talmy and Wallace chafe. Talmy frames the issues of enunciation within his notion of conceptual structures, while Chafe reinterprets point-of-view as the issue of devices permitting different representations of consciousness in a text. The paper further develops these insights with reference to analyses of a string of fiction examples.

Sažetak:A new term has appeared within semiotics over the last few decaeds: 'phenomenological semiotics'. However, it can appear to be unclear how to understand this new compound term. Phenomenology is a multifarious philosophical movement that no longer allows itself to be used as a descriptive adjective. In this article, I will attempt to qualify the term. My starting popint is that both Edmund Husserl, and the polish philosopher Roman Ingarden are relevant for a preparation of a cognitive semiotics that does not eliminate the formation of the sign's phenomenological dimension. To illustrate, this, I will stress the semiotic perspective within cognitive linguistics with basis in the triadic concept of the sign within the phenomenological tradition, and remain critical of, among others, Ronald Langacker and John R. Tylor's support for Ferdinand de Saussure's dyadic concept of the sign. To conclude, I will sketch a phenomenological theory of sign's effect on a literary semiotics with Virginia Woolf's novel 'Mrs. Dalloway' as an example.

Sažetak:In this article, I argue that the representation of simple, bodily action has the function of endowing the narrative sequence with a visualizing power. It makes the narrates scenes or situations ready for visualization by the reader of listener. By virtue of this visualizing power of disposition, these narrated actions disrupt the theoretical divisions, on the one hand, between the narrated story and the narrating discourse, and on the other hand, between plot-narratology and discourse-narratology. A narratied actions, they seem to belong to the domain of plot-narratology, but insofar as they serve an important visualizing function, these narrated actions have a communicative function and, as such, they can be said to belong to the domain of discourse-narratology. In the first part of the article, I argue that a certain type of plot-narratology, due to its retrospective epistemology and abstract definition of action, is unable to conceive of this visualizing function. In the second part, I argue that discourse-narratology fares no better since the visualizing function is independent of voice and focalization. In the final part, I sketch a possible account of the visualizing function of simple actions in narratives.

The paper traces the trajectory of the elimination of 'Vorstellung' in language semantics from Frege to Saussure and to the demise of the signified in the post-Saussurean tradition. Alternative perspectivesa re introduced that promise the rehabilitation of the perceptual ingredients of language, such as cognitive linguistics (Lakoff) and corporeal pragmatics (Ruthrof), approaches that could be used to revive literary semantics by granting 'Vorstellung' its proper role in the theoretization of literary meaning.

Sažetak:This text has two parts. In the first section, we intend to define the narrative schema - the canonical plot structure - as a 'symbolic form' in Ernst Cassirer's sense of the term. This basically implies that the narrative schema is not an invarianat hegher order combinatorial form, but may itself be subject to variations in view of yielding specific meaning effects. This is because the production and reception of a narrative is a dynamic process where physical forces, modal forces and intentions set up a space of possibilities for the narrative trajectory. We therefore propose a determination of the narrative schema in terms of 'force dynamics'. in the next section we proceed to an analysis of Ernst Hemingway's 'A very short story' in order to illustrate this point. We lay down the main elements of its remarkable, if not simply outstanding both narrative and semantic-configurational structure: its plot structure is indeed driven by an inverted narrative schema and each significant event in the story but one (as well as each physical paragraph but one) has its rigorously symmetrical counterpart. Moreover, this inverted schema can be explained in terms of the modal forces at stake in the narrative.

Sažetak:This paper aims to establish the origin of the narrative schema in the perception of intentional movements. The distinction between mechanical and intentional movements is vital for human veings, and the narrative schema, which is underpinned by this distinction, is therefore a basic cognitive principle of intelligibility. This is the reason why the narrative schema is by no means confined to the domain of the literary work or art. It is rather a major principle for the combination of partial significations in many other domains. The paper explores the role traditionally assigned to the narrative schema within continental semiotics and, through an interpretation of Heider and Simmel's study on apparent behavior, it establishes the cognitive import of the narrative schema and its origin in visual perception: finally, it gives examples of the meaning organizing import of the narrative schema.

Sažetak:The concept of the unreliable narrator is among the most discussed in current narratology. From being considered a text-internal matter between the personified narrator and the implied author by Booth, or the implied reader by Chatman, cognitive and constructivist narrative theorists like A. Nünning have described it as a reader-dependent issues. The detection of a narrator's unreliability is an act of 'naturalization', he claims, with reference to Culler. This article concentrates on this long and ongoing debate and considers the different approaches critically with special attention to the position of A. Nünning. In the final section, a four-category taxonomy for the different textual strategies that estavlishes unreliable narration is suggested. The headlines for the taxonomy are intranarrational unreliability, internarrational unreliability, intertextual unreliability, and extratextual unreliability.

Sažetak:The key to fictionality is the construction of fictional minds. A fictional narrative is, in essence, the presentation of the mental functioning of the characters who inhabit the storyworld created by that narrative. Readers enter a storyworld primarly by using their knowledge of how to interpret other people's thoughts processes in the real world in order to try to follow the workings of characters' minds. Otherwise, readers will lose the plot. In this essay, I will suggest that there are twelve features relating to fictional minds that recur in all or nearly all novels. This argument will be put into three contexts: the cognitive turn in literature studies, discussions regarding the concept of narrative universals, and the longstanding debate on how the term 'narrative' should be properly defined. I will also argue that my generalizations regarding the twelve features are not invalidated by a few counterexamples, and that some, particularly postmodern, novels gain their power and impact precisely from their attempts to undermine the default assumptions contained in these features.

Sažetak:In early narratological research, roles were constructed as invariant semantic functions fulfilled by characters with variable surface (e.g., both Claudius in 'Hamlet' and Lex Luther in 'Superman' instantiate the role of 'villain'). Subsequent story analysts have drawn on arange of explanatory paradigms - including models of discourse processing, semantic and functionalist frameworks, and (socio)pragmatic theories - to develop richer accounts of roles and their bearing on narrative understanding. The present paper provides an overview of this research, arguing for the advantages of an integrative approach in which roles assume the profile of complex, multidimensional, inferential constructs. From this perspectice, roles in narrative are constellations of structural, semantic, and other factors, any subset of which toles assume the profile of complex, multidimensional, inferential constructs. From this perspecitve, roles in narrative are constellations of structural, semantic, and other factors, any subset of which may be more or less salient, depending on the nature and distribution of the doscourse cues used to trigger role-based inferences in narrative contexts. The multifacetedness of roles in stories and the resulting need to combine multiple role.theoretic perspectives are pertinent for emergent research initiatives concerned sith 'narrative intelligence' (David 2005; Mateas and Sengter 2003), among other approaches to narrative viewed as a cognitive and sociosemiotic resource.

Sažetak:Narratives in literature and even in the comics have become self-referential. A self-referential narrative sign is one that represents itself. The sign is its own object, narrating and narrated time become conflated. Instead of narrating a story, a self-referential narrative narrates that it narrates and how or why the characters in the narrative have found their way into the narative. M.-A. Mathieu's 'L'Origine' is a self-referential comic book story of a protagonist who learns from his narrators, a ream of comic book artists, that he exists only on the paper of a comic book. Two semiotic devices of delf-referential verbal and pictorial narrating are distinguished and examined. Iconic self-reference is exemplified by self-repeating signs and signs that represent themselves in the form of mirror texts of self.referential pictures in the picture (mise en abyme). Indexical self-reference is exemplified by the devices of fragmentation and metalepsis, the participation of a narrator in the narrative events. Metalepsis leads to narrative paradoxes and is a major source of humor.

Sažetak:This article is an attempt to clarify the idea that narratives cohere by representing stories. Stories are causally related in the way proposed by Noël Carroll, i.e., the events and states constitute necessary conditions of sufficiant conditions or INUS-conditions of each other. Then, a general concept of propositional coherence is suggested. It is based on Nelson Goodman's and Joseph Ullian's ideas about unitary formulas. Narrative coherence is defined as the propositional understanding of a text (in the wide sense, including non-verbal narratives) that constitutes one unitary string built upon conditional relations, i.e., relations between individuals matching Carroll's rypes of conditions.

It is argued that literature is linguistic mimetic meta-representation. The semiotic perspective allows us to deal, in a productive way, with a number of key issues in literary theory (such as 'literariness', literature versus entertainment, and literary diachrony). Moreover, a methodology for the study of literature and the arts in culture is proposed, consistint of three complementary approaches or 'strategies': the phenomenological, the hermeneutical, and the empirical.

Sažetak:In this article, an anthropologicall definition of literature is attempted. Since all communities seem to have some kind of literature (including its simple forms: myth, folktale, fable, proverb, and song), literature is claimed to be a human universal. Hence, literary discourse should be added to the four basic discourses that Habermas has pointed out and discussed; namely,, theoretical, practical, historical, and technical discourses. Five charadteristics of literar discourse anre pointed out here: fictionality, poeticity, inquisitoriality, poetic licence, and contemplation. It is not claimed that every text that is classified as literary necessarily contains all five features, but a vast majority of them do. Finally, it is argued that literary discourse is special because it redefines Habermas' four so-called 'universal-pragmatic validity' claims: understandability, truth, normative rightness, and sincerity. These claims are not altogether suspended, but they are given new meanings and attenuated in literary discourse.

Sažetak:Why, in light of the multiple approaches to literature that mark the various semiotic traditions and their complex interwinings, would one turn to Susanne Langer's seemingly 'marginal' or idiosyncratic semiotic theory of art for conceptual resources? I argue that the conceptual core of the answer is found in Langer's notion of a 'symbol of feeling', which is connected with her notion of 'semblance', the imaginal power of art symbols to construct and present their own 'primary illusions'. Works of literature - of the poetic art - do not follow a discursive, but rather a presentational logic, giving us access to 'virtual experience'.

Sažetak:As a consequence of the specific nature of Peirce's philosophical view, the literary text need not be set against semiotic theory; instead, it may be situated in such a way as to prolong the sign and the movement of semiosis. In the first instance, the author iinvestigated the manifestation of the literary object within Peirce's semiotic discourse. Several references to Emerson's famous poem 'The Sphinx' are analyzed. This is followed by an analysis of three recurring literary figures: Hamlet, Robinson Crusoe, and Chevalier Dupin. It becomes obvious that Peirce had a significant knowledge of there figures but, more importantly, this leds to recognizing that affinity that exists between such literary projects and Peirce's semmiotic: the latter seemingly feeding off the fictional nature of such literary works in constituting itself as a full-fledged semiotic discourse. In the second part of the article, the author examines two theoretical themes such as they develop within two classical literary works: aspects of Firstness (feelings and poptentiality) with regards to the famous 'medeleine' episode in Proust (Du côté de chez Swann); and an excess of iconicity such that it inhibits any movement of semiosis in Edgar Alan Poe's 'The fall of the house of Usher'

Sažetak:It is well-known that Peirce developed a broad classification of the sciences, which are interconnected by hierarchically interdependent and non-linear relations. The higher the level of a science in the hierarchy, themore abstract that science is and, such, it provides the less abstract sciences with general concepts and principles. At the same time, the empirical sciences provide the abstract ones with new problems and questions. At the core of Peirce's classification is his architecture of philosophical disciplines. It was his endeavor that these disciplines should display the general concepts and principles for all the idioscopic or special sciences. Considering that literary studies can be understood as an idioscopic science, the aim of this paper is to discuss the place of literature in Peirce's classificatory diagram and to suggest the possible relations that literary studies may entertain with the philosophical disciplines, that is, phenomenology, the normative sciences, and metaphysics.

Sažetak:This article argues that for the past ten or fifteen years literary semiotics has been in a new phase of development. The adoption of Charles Peirce's pragmatic semiotics as the rrame theory for research in literary semiosis has opened up new questions and topics for analysis and facilitated a return to essential concerns neglected by the earlier approaches. Three lines of interrogation emerge as central from work done to date: analysis of language-world relationship, imaginative reading, and interpretation as dialogic production of shared knowledge. The article reviews the maiin discussions on these topics, also relating the pragmatic approach to compeeting paradigms in literary studies.

Sažetak:The use of diagrams as a tool of narrative analysis is a fundamentally semiotic project whose origins can be traced back to the emphasis placed by the structuralist movement on the synchronic systems that underline signification. Defining diagrams as a spatial presentation of information which conveys meanings that could not be expressed in the linear form of a text,a list, or a formal coding system, this paper focuses on attempts to represent individual narrative plots, as opposed to diagrams that model a universal narrative structure or discourse phenomena. Through the analysis of diagrams relating to three aspects of plot - time, space, and mind - this paper argues that graphic representations are not merely a tool for representing narratological knowledge, but an important way to produce this knowledge. At their very best, they can be the seed of a new theory.

Sažetak:Animals in the Bible and Biblical spirituality : The Bible speaks of animals in several ways. First they are created alongside humans; then, after Humanity's downfall (And the splitting of the world along the nature/culture, male/female, immortality/history binaries), animals become a source of food. They also function as "background" in descriptions of the human world, and as symbols of human characters and situations. As the Biblical consciousness of human "superiorirty" increases, animals become sacrificial objects, representing the subordination of the "lower" strata of the universe to the "higher". As such, they are included in the divine intention of saving the world. Despte deeply ingrained beliefs to do with Western/Christian human superiority, the Bible points to an understanding of Humankind's spiritual evolution, which foes beyond a mere interdiction of cruelty to animals. To struggle against the tyranny of humans over the non-human world is as important as any other social question. The objective of redemption is the saving of all creatures. A morally acceptable human world is incompatible with the suffering of even a single creature. Humanity's freedom entails the freeing of animals.

Sažetak:The Twofold concept or animals in Job's bestiary: zoolexical items of interest in the Croatian Glagolitic Book of Job : The basic premises of the Old Testament are presented both concretely and abstractly, as is also the case in the 'Book of Job'. The philosophy of the early Orient was based on the relationship between those two concepts. The concrete was regularly marked with symbolism, while attempts were made to concretise the abstract by visualisation and a certain figurative quality. It is the animal world that is particularly interesting in the research of this issue, since, through its variety and unfamiliarity, it opened up many channels of literary expressivenessm, which allow us to penetrate more deeply into the essential notions at the core of distant times. The Croatian Glagolitic version is largely successful in solving the demanding literary interpretations, maintaining to the extent possible the abstract/concrete balance, by which it follows the Scriptural tradition of textual transmission. The major deviation from the original is seen when the mythological animals of the early Orient and in question, since they largely belong to an abstract category that, because of its notional elusiveness, is difficult to transpose to another environment. This is also one of the rare instances in which the biblical rule of the abstract and the concrete is not respected, since the laws of translation have not permitted this back from the time of the Slavic Apostles. INterpretational licence and textual adaptations do not disrupt the meanings but merely confirm the finely honed skills as translators of the Mediaeval Croatian Glagolists (Zaradja Kiš 2003:129-142), and, particulary, their highly professional approach to the textual adaptation of the elements of early civilisations.

Sažetak:Bible translation over the past half century has increasingly supplemented its traditional philological-.inguistic approach with a wide variety of disciplines ranging from archeology to cultural studies. This turn toward an interdisciplinary approach is especially true of the new media Bible translation with its theory and practice now engaging virtually every digital and screen medium. Not surprisingly, (new media) Bible translation has discovered the field of semiotics, thanks in large measure to the work of translation scholars such as Dinda L. Gorlée and Ubaldo Stecconi, whose pioneering research into Charles Sanders Peirce has unearthed a gold mine of conceptual and even practical applications of semiotics to translation research, training, evaluation, and production. In this essay, we set out some of the foundational elements of Peircean semiotics in its application to Bible translation, including new media Bible translation. in particular, the insights of semiotics into the process of sign production and meaning making will add exponentially to the resources for Bible translators.

Sažetak:This paper attempts to state that the semiotic movement will obtain a new momentum in the globalization era if a more desirable strategy could be widely adopted. First of all, it should equally include both European-American and non-European-American academic/cultural traditions; it should be also engaged in the current remoulding process of all social/human sciences; especially, semiotics will hopefully become one of the theoretical bases for reorganizing and reforming the entire humanisties. Signs have been the central conceptual units used for the study of meaning in semiotic history. While for the past decades the study of meaning has expanded more and more to the scope of the structure and formation of the entire humanities. Accordingly, our concren with the progress of semiotic today is closely linked to the general endeavor to promote the development of human sciences. In essence semiotics can be regarede today as a one of the main gateways to the epistemological and methodological modernization of human sciences across all cultural traditions. Regarding this goal, the main object-domain of semiotic operation will be naturally shifted from the actual world (where signs appear) to the academic discourses (where multiple semantic units appear). The cross.cultural semiotics will certanly further strenghten this tendency.

The linguistic limitations of the autistic individual suggests a congruent status of mind with the archais people of the Upper Paleolithic, which could indicate language in its infancy. This notion is examined in terms of archealogical, paleontological, art historical, neurological, semiotics, and cognitive views of language evolution.

Sažetak:'Mental states' are retheorized from the standpoint of social statuses (que commitments and entitlements to signify and interpret in particular ways) and speech acts (qua signs with propositional contents). Using ideas developed in 'The semiotic stance' (2005a), it theorizies five interrelated semiotic processes that are usually understood ina psychological idiom: memories, perceptions, beliefs, intentions, and plans. It uses this theory to account for the key features of human-specific modes of interntionality (or 'theory of mind'), as well as the key dimensions along which culture-specific modes of intentionality may vary (or 'ethnopsychologies'). And it theorizes 'emotion' in terms of a framework that bridges the distinction between social constructions and natural kinds.

Sažetak:This essay brings Peirce's understanding of meaning to bear on Heidegger's critique of mind, thereby articulating being-in-the-world in terms of semiosis. Using ideas developed in 'The semiotic stance' (2005), it theorizes five interrelated semiotic processes - heeding affordances, wielding instruments, undertaking, actions, performing roles, and filling identities - that constitute the key modes of non-linguistic and/or non-representational meaning in which human-beings are always already holistically implicated. It doing so, it theorizes shat is meant by purchases, function, purposes, statuses, and values (as well as providing a semiotically sophisticated account of 'material culture'). And it teneralizes Anscombe's idea of 'acting under a description' to comporting within an interpretation.

Sažetak:Building on ideas developed in 'The semiotic stance' (2005), this essay outlines a social and semiotic theory of four seemingly human-specific and individual-centric capacities that, while essential for understanding modern social processes, are often confused and conflated. Loosely spesking, agency is a cauusal capacity: say, the relatively flexible wielding of means towards ends. Subjectivity is a representational capacity: say, the holding of intentional states such as belief and desire. Selfhood is a reflexive capacity: say, being the means and ends of one's own actions, or being the object of one's own beliefs and desires. And personhood is a sociopolitical capacity: say, tights and responsibilities attendant on being an agent, subject or self.

Sažetak:This article looks at card playing practices among elderly people in Koper, a town on the border between Slovenia and Italy. It foregrounds card playing as a constitutive social field where subjects share and negotiate their border identities. The 'extrasituational context' provides the complexity of the games invoked at the table such as the repressed memories and the stigmatized mother tongue. This article draws attention to 'language games' and the extent to which by changing games, different rules imply a shifting of roles. By suggesting that card playing is not simply a ludic activity, this article offers a psychoanalytical reading of both the importance and fragility of the Batesonian 'it is a play' frame.

Sažetak:This paper examines presupposition and implication from a semiotic perspective. It suggests that the conventional approaches to presupposition have a limited focus because of emphasis on truth-value, or the propositional level of the utterance. The paper demonstrates how texts construct an assumed world of agents, which can be traced in narrative structure. This presupposed world' gives the story the form in which it is narrated. By analyzing utterances from a variety of written texts, the paper outlines an approach that traces presupposed worlds in syntactic and semantic strategies. The paradigmatic and syntagmatic axes, and the deictic framework of the text are examined to show this. The paper concludes by discussing the significance of presupposed worlds for semiotic text analysis.

Sažetak:An extension is made of the neo-dualist model of Logan and Schumann (2005) where a distinction is made between the symbolosphere, which includes the human mind and all its thoughts and communication processes such as language and the physiosphere, which is simply the physical world and includes the human brain. The notion that the symbolosphere can be thought of as consisting of two separate subdomains, the Mind, and the mediasphere is examined. The first non-physical subdomain, Mind, consists of the human mind and its abstract symbolic thoughts, language, culture, concepts, and memes. The second subdomain consists of the products of the human mind instantiated in the physiosphere, which we define as the mediasphere. Examples of the mediasphere in the domains of science, mathematics, technology, music, and the fine arts are made. A correspondence of this approach with Popper's notion of three worlds is made

Sažetak:Education has always been an institutional process across the globe with schooling as its central agent. But for sometime now, there have been demands to revisit the role of education in building literate societies. For, as has been often stated, education is not just a fundamental and constitutional right, but a fundamental human process as well. However, ironically, evaluations of the existing educational process have come in the form of external commentaries. We need to understand the impact of literacy through an internal evaluation by engaging with the people who directly derive meaning from them. Meaning making, is social, material, and by analogy so is literacy. Field observations conducted in a village in South Assam, a state in Eastern India, to study the impact of the 'Same Language Subtitling,' an experiment in support of literacy provided insights into existing models of literacy and demonstrated a need to amalgamate them into contexts that pertain to the receivers of literacy experiments. The responses to the subtitling were motivated by clear pragmatic subjectivities in relation to the surrounding discourses. This paper demonstrates that questions on the growth of literacy should hinge upon what counts as knowledge, whether the users believe knowledge is created, and whether this knowledge relates to their lives in any way.

Sažetak:The term 'dialogue' has its origin in the study of human language, where it is regarded primarily as a form of discourse, and hence as a pragmatic-level phenomenon. However, 'dialogue' is nowadays also used to denote human-computer interaction; and in this field it tends to be described in syntactic rather than in pragmatic terms. But to treat dialogue as though the term had two distinct senses is unsatisfactory and unwarranted. Instead we show how it is possible to maintain a consistent, discourse-based view of dialogue that encompasses not only interpersonal communication but also multi-modal human-computer interaction.

Sažetak:This paper attempts to understand the coexistence of the material and nonmaterial aspects of our lives. By synthesizing ideas about structures, physical entities, mental phenomena, and symbolic relations, we argue that the nonmaterial can emerge from the material, and then the nonmaterial may mediate the production of material entities. Finally, this cycle is applied to notions of creativity and invention.

Sažetak:Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, one of his most financially successful stories, is not so much a fantasy of 'policing' Victorian society and its wealthy class (as it appears in part to be), as it is a subtle unwriting of a policed society and the related securities of semiotic, financial, professional, and scientific processes. This is effected through the sign of the detective - his depersonalization, his interchangeability with the villain, his marks of utter professionalism - as well as in narrative signs of capitalism's appropriative centrality to all the agents and events in the novel. The process of reading thus becomes an alternative semiotics of the marketplace, in which codes of capitalism's alienating and displacing power are written into, and work in contrast to, the linear narrative of the detective's prowess and his triumph over the villain.

Sažetak:The abiding cultural significance of swords, in an age of technologically-sophisticated weapons of mass destruction, is as much a semiotic puzzle as it is a socio-psychological one. The semiotics of swords displays certain features - commodity fetishism, the business speak of 'cutting edge' performance, primitive vitality, and related elements - that reveal the doubleness of desire in market society, the simultaneous desire to negate the capitalist present in favor of a primitivist past, together with an invigoration of the present through tropes of violent conflict. The edginess of sword-semiotics also marks certain points of cultural instability, in terms of race, gender, and sexuality, evincing an incessantly transgressive impulse.

Sažetak:Terms loaded with informational connotations are often employed to refer to genes and their dynamics. Indeed, genes are usually perceived by biologists as basically 'the carriers of hereditary information.' Nevertheless, a number of researchers consider such talk as inadequate and just metaphorical,' thus expressing a skepticism about the use of the term 'information' and its derivatives in biology as a natural science. First, because the meaning of that term in biology is not as precise as it is, for instance, in the mathematical theory of communication. Second, because it seems to refer to a purported semantic property of genes without theoretically clarifying if any genuinely intrinsic semantics is involved. Biosemiotics, afield that attempts to analyze biological systems as semiotic systems, makes it possible to advance in the understanding of the concept of information in biology. From the perspective of Peircean biosemiotics, we develop here an account of genes as signs, including a detailed analysis of two fundamental processes in the genetic information system (transcription and protein synthesis) that have not been made so far in this field of research. Furthermore, we propose here an account of information based on Peircean semiotics and apply it to our analysis of transcription and protein synthesis.

Sažetak:The paper develops a characterization of nominal compounds. The analysis is carried out on frame-schematic and construction-grammatical grounds. It rests on assumptions about cognitive processing long since known within cognitive linguistics, but it criticizes certain linguistic applications of Fauconnier and Turner's theory of conceptual integration, which historically is a reelaboration of Lakoff and Johnson's theory of metaphor. The first section sums up two classical approaches in the analysis of nominal compounds; it comments on their inadequacies, and how these have been assessed by Fauconnier and Turner; next, it sketches out the way these two authors and other scholars in blending theory have traditionally analyzed nominal compounds in terms of conceptual integration, and finally one of the major drawbacks of this approach is identified: namely, its limited descriptive import. In the following section, the authors unfold their own semantic analysis. A non-trivial and non-standard compositional theory is proposed, likely to capture the general way in which semantic parts of a compound configure into a semantic whole. Hereafter the authors proceed to a summary survey of how this scaffolding is actually instantiated or processed cognitively. A crucial difference between processing of literal and metaphorical compounds is established. Thus, the approach has a double scope: it aims at characterizing both the semantics of compounds and the way the semantics is cognitively accessed

Sažetak:Medicine and language have had a tumultuous relationship at best. The two fields inform and describe each other. The methods of each have been applied to the other at various times in history. The medical symptom and the linguistic sign have much in common and yet are not the same. Nonetheless, literature offers us a perspective on our cultural perceptions of certain realities and disease is unmistakably one of the most ambiguous of those realities. The unique combination of medical thought and linguistic expression present in literary metaphors incorporating or referring to illness reveals a conceptual understanding of health that informs our interpretation of related signifiers. This study is an attempt to identify and explore some of the most prevalent metaphors and metonymies related to disease and through the process, comprehend the way in which culture thinks about the more general concept of health.

Sažetak:The article aspires to present a systematized view on the contemporary understanding of metaphor essence and structure, reviews various classifications of metaphor, and discusses cognate 'similarity-based' phenomena in natural language. The opposing views on metaphor as a three- and two-component structure are reconciled in the article through the analysis of different kinds of metaphors. Three types of classifications of metaphor semantic, structural and functional - are specified and reviewed. Finally, the article examines the cognate phenomena, viz. metaphoric personification (prosopopoeia, pathetic fallacy, apostrophe), animalification, metaphoric antonomasia, metaphoric allusion, metaphoric periphrasis, synesthesia, allegory, and metaphoric symbolism.

Sažetak:The literal application of the notion of 'metaphor' to the iconic system of signification and communication requires, first, to release the theory of verbal metaphor from its linguistic bias and, second, to propose a theory capable of explaining adequately both verbal and iconic metaphor. I suggest such a comprehensive theory, which attempts to compensate for these limitations, as well as a set of basic kinds of iconic metaphors that reflect the same deep structure, the same rules of ellipsis, and the specific constraints of iconic media, as follows: (a) iconic metaphor on the level of characterization (including costume, set, etc.); (b) iconic metaphor on the level of nonverbal interaction; (c) iconic metaphor on the level of verbal interaction; (d) verbal metaphor in iconic dialogue; (e) iconic allegory; and (f) the metaphoric nature of the spectator's experience. I illustrate these kinds of iconic metaphor using examples from theatre, while supporting their general application with examples from other iconic arts.

Sažetak:This paper interrogates the conditions of possibility of the European constitution and asks where we must search for these conditions. Beyond common historical and cultural traditions, beyond some pact or convention, a third possibility is considered: the idea that Europe has no future without a European constitution founded on awareness that all European nations participate in a common destiny, which in the era of globalization is the destiny of the whole world. Such participation must be based on the logic of otherness and reasonableness of which the human being alone as a semiotic animal is capable.

Sažetak:In this text we pose the problem of the place of the political in Levinas' thought: is it placed at the level of the totality or beyond the totality? To answer this question we will reflect upon the concept of forgiveness because it marks, as I try to show in this text, the border between the totality and its beyond. I'll try to show, in this text, that the link that Levinas establishes between forgiveness and Feminine means that Feminine is the condition of possibility of politics.
