Sažetak: | Language and the animal : Each animal species has its own language, its mode of communication within the species and outside it, while Humankind treats animals in various ways in its numerous languages. The ocntent of this paper relate oly to the second of these issues - the place of animals in human language. In myths, fables and fairy-tales, animals speak and are spoken to. Man attaches scientific and popular names to the animals' bodies and the sounds they produce. He gives himself the forename and surname of certain animals. He attributes the features of certain animals to his own spiritual characteristics and behaviour. He praises, curses and speaks the language of love by reffering to certain animal species. With which animal species does he do all that and why precisely with them, and not certain others? |

Sažetak: | The Boškarin: from day-labourner to exposition exhibit : revitaliation of Istrian cattle with particular emphasis on the Boškarin has been aided by the reawakening ot regional identity and romantic acceptance of Istrian traditions and symbols. The abating of political applications and the strengthening once again of gastronomic considerations connected with agriculture - the boom in viticulture and edible oil production, profitable agro-tourism - have conditioned a revalidationof the Boškarin. The Boškarin as the focus of Istrian cattle.breeding is becoming a current theme, primarly as a tourist attraction, and as an object of interest to aware individuals with astute marketing orientations, young farmer-businessmen who are preventing the extinction of this animal species, having, as they do, a presentiment of its value. The revitalisation of the Boškarin and its use/misuse is the topic under consideration with evaluation of the position of this animal in Istria. the text documents diachronically, and analyses in one part, the co-existence of Istrian cattle and Man, and the solution of and motives for its survival are expounded upon. |

Sažetak: | Beliefs in some creatures that transform into animals : This paper deals with folk beliefs in supernatural creatures that are considered to have the power of transforming into animals. The analysis is based on literature and numerous manuscripts and published materials and covers the Criatian coastal region and the Dalmatian hinterland, where these beliefs were mentioned more frequently. The power of transforming into animals was attributed to all beinigs featuring in folk tradition in that region and this paper focuses on werewolves, witches, 'krsniks', and 'moras' that are interwoven in common traditional beliefs. The paper provides an overview of ideas and legends about these supernatural creatures and their power to transform into an animal prevalence. Analysis of each particular creature shows that the power to transform into an animal is not the main, but a peripheral feature, just one of the supernatural characteristic attributed to them. However, this particular faculty may be taken into account when comparing and placing these creatures within a defined framework where their common characteristics can be traced in various folk traditions. |

Sažetak: | Equine medicine : The presented text of the folk medication manuscript written in the 18th century Kajkavian language whows which healing methods were used in the treatment of sick horses - domestic animals. It also shows the complications encountered in shoeing horses and/or how undesirable consequences were eliminated. Since various prescriptions shown here are not found in the published book of medications ('Vračitel betegujuče živine', 1799), they are even more interesting because they have been unknown to date to the broad (professional) public. The titles and ocntent of individual instructions for treating horses shows that they were intended for people keeping horses in the villages. As far as language, content and purpose are concerned, these remedies are valuable as a linguistic-veterinarian document of the time at which they were written. The added dictionary is intended to falicitate understanding of individual Kajkavian words by readers who do not understand the 18th century Kajkavian language. |

Sažetak: | Carnival of animals : Both humans and animals participate in the temporal reserve of Carnival. The ostensible victory of Chaos over the Cosmos liberates individual (human) destructive energy and elleviates social tensions by way of three main Shrovetide themes: food, sexuality and violence. Animal meat is the main component of Carnival food, while traces of ritual violence against animals continues to exist even incontemporary carnivals. This can behistorically interpreted by the (still incomplete) process of replacement of the human by the animal sacrifice, and the animal mask and the puppet. Apart from with the participation of live animals in Carnival customs, the author deals in more detail with their connection with the wearing of Carnival masks and gives a review of the main types and personages in zoomorphic masking in Croatia. |

Sažetak: | Animal starlore : Folk traditions concerned with representations of animals in hight-sky alignments are described and explained. Cratian data is compared with foreing traditions. After Man himself, embodied in a number of characters and anthropomorphic figures, animals comprise the second group of sky representations - through constellations, asterisms, particular stars and planets. Thereason for such a cognitive method of space/time categorization could be a match between the patterns of sky movement and animal locomotion. |

Sažetak: | The role od the legend in constructing the annual cycle : The purpose of this paper is firstly to whow how research into folklore traditions can unveil the important rold played by mythological beings, which at first glance appear unimportant, in the construction and consolidation of the concept of time, i.e. the calendar system. The paper is based on the folklore tradition of a mythical being, the Master of the Wolves, whose chief function is commanding of dividing up food among the wolves. He appears in many Slavic and other European beliefs and legends, and some Southern Slavs celebrate so.called "wolf holidays" (during which many acts are forbidden in order to protect oneself and one's livestock against wolves). A being with the same function appears in many incantations against wolves. Although the legends (and the associated holidays) and incantations also exhibit many other commom elements, their respective messsages are diametrically opposite: while the legends speak of the coming and the setting free of the wolves, the incantations speak of their muzzling and departure. In order to clarify this contrast, it was first necessary to establish the time with which both were connected. It turns out that the incantaions are normally connected with the first days of pasturing at springtime, while the legends refer to the last days of pasturing in the autumn. The belief found in Finish and in Slavic folklore thet the Master of the Wolves frees the muzzles of the wolves on the last day of pasturing, these remaining open throught the sinter (owing to which livestock must remain in the barns from that day forward), and again muzzles them on the first day of pasturing in the springtime (the livestock are free to roam from then on), binds the two halves of the year ingo a complete whole. The legends and incantations as well as the beliefs and customs clearly indicate the tradition, the intention of which was to consolidate the changing of time, the binary opposition of winterand summer, as it pertained to the stockbreeders' annual cycle. |

Sažetak: | Falling sickness, descending wolf: the wolf-epilepsy iontertext in Western South Slavic - folk tradition : On the basis of the available ethnographic, oral literary and lexicographic sources from the 19th and 20th centuries, this article analyses the linguistic and extralinguistic (cultural, conceptual) motivations underlying associations between epilepsy and wolves in the traditional folk culture of the Western South Slavic (i.e. Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin) area. It focuses on fold medicinal-magic applications of the woolf in treatments of epilepsy, the interpretation of which necessarily involves reference to folk etymology, symptomatology and attitudes towards disease, the role of the wolf in folk medicine in general, and aspects of wolf symbolics and worldview beyond the mere domain of folk medicine. More in particular, the author discusses the following interrelated issues: (1) the folk associatin of both wolves and falling sickness with mountains and woods, which in the case of epilepsy bears an onomasiological character and is the result of paronymous attraction; (2) the ambivalent symbolical status of the wolf in folk medicinal practice and its role in treatments of epilepsy, in connection with "symptomatological annex characterological" folk conceptions; and (3) folk beliefs, narrations, and qualifications concerning epilepsy and wolves outside the domain of folk medicine 'stricto sensu', which point toward evaluations of the "high-low" continuum in folk worldview as a specific motivational factor in "wolf - epilepsy" associations. |

Sažetak: | The symbolics of animals in Slavic popular tradition: domestic insects - pests (fleas, lice, bedbugs, cockroaches) : The similarity between domestic insectes (pests such as fleas, lice bedbugs, cockroaches) is demonstrated in the fact that they are conceived as unclean creatures and are exposed to ritual-magical extermination or are driven out by imitating their funerals, forcing them out of the house, planting them in the houses of neighbours of the priest and others, spring sweeping of houses and taking out the rubbish, and wsalking around the house chanting incantations, and the like. However, these insects can also bring Kumankind good fortune and riches. Identical nautre is also seen in the genesis of these insects. Legends and beliefs testify to their close kinship with reptiles, particulary with the snake. The chthonic nature of fleas and lice is defined by their origins from earth and dust. The reason for liceinfestation are often linked with serpents - snakes - and with worms. In etiological legends and beliefs, the genesis of fleas and lice is connected both with fire (sparks and ash) and with water. Their omens augur rain and, like other reptiles, they are used in rainmakiing rituals. Cockroaches are allocated with the functin of protectors of the home, characteristic to chthonic animals - reptiles and some insects (snakes, frogs, tortoises, sipders, crickets, ants, etc). Lice and fleas are symbolically compared with a similar host of diverse small objects: seeds of flax, hemp, poppy, wheat, and breadcrumbs, sand and coins. Lice and flies are often described as livestock in riddles and other short folklore genres, while they appear as humorous characters in jocular congs, proverbs and sayings. |

Sažetak: | The Istrian Mediaeval bestiary: animals in Istrian Mediaeval murals : The depictions of animals in Istrian murals, as in European Mediaeval art, are largely defined by iconographic themes. In that sense, certain animals determined by iconographic themes have symbolic meaning, as in the depiction of the Tetramorph with symbolic animyl personages of the evangelists. On the other hand, certain animals defined by iconographic themes are not shown because of their symbolic meaning, but because of their practical roles in the everyday life of men and women in the Middle Ages, such as the horses in the scenes of the 'Poklonstvo kraljeva' (The HOmage of the Magi), horses having been almost the only means of transport in Mediaeval times. In the review of Istrian Mediaeval murals, the weakest iconographic given and, consequently, the strongest connection with everyday life, is found in the depictions of hunting scenes. Hunting was the favourite pastime of the Mediaeval nobility. Hence, hunting scenes as shown on Istrian Mediaeval murals were probably not an everyday event encountered by the men and women of Medieval Istria; rather, this scene on Istrian murals followed the models from other artistic centres and brought echoes of international Gothic art to the walls of Istrian churches. The depiction of animals not firmly linked to the iconographic model are presented in the scenes of the 'Bijeg u Egipat' ('The flight into Egypt') in which the animals accompanying the Holy Family represent a walkling larder, or as in the scenes of the 'Kalendar' ('Calendar'), in which those for some months are determined by the food eaten during those particular months, such as the Lenten fast in March, or the slaughter of pigs in November. Such a stance towards the depiction of animals in Istrian Mediaeval murals shows that one of the most important characteristics of animals in the lives of men and women during the Middle Ages was their significance in nutrition. |

Sažetak: | Animals in the Bible and Biblical spirituality : The Bible speaks of animals in several ways. First they are created alongside humans; then, after Humanity's downfall (And the splitting of the world along the nature/culture, male/female, immortality/history binaries), animals become a source of food. They also function as "background" in descriptions of the human world, and as symbols of human characters and situations. As the Biblical consciousness of human "superiorirty" increases, animals become sacrificial objects, representing the subordination of the "lower" strata of the universe to the "higher". As such, they are included in the divine intention of saving the world. Despte deeply ingrained beliefs to do with Western/Christian human superiority, the Bible points to an understanding of Humankind's spiritual evolution, which foes beyond a mere interdiction of cruelty to animals. To struggle against the tyranny of humans over the non-human world is as important as any other social question. The objective of redemption is the saving of all creatures. A morally acceptable human world is incompatible with the suffering of even a single creature. Humanity's freedom entails the freeing of animals. |

Sažetak: | The Twofold concept or animals in Job's bestiary: zoolexical items of interest in the Croatian Glagolitic Book of Job : The basic premises of the Old Testament are presented both concretely and abstractly, as is also the case in the 'Book of Job'. The philosophy of the early Orient was based on the relationship between those two concepts. The concrete was regularly marked with symbolism, while attempts were made to concretise the abstract by visualisation and a certain figurative quality. It is the animal world that is particularly interesting in the research of this issue, since, through its variety and unfamiliarity, it opened up many channels of literary expressivenessm, which allow us to penetrate more deeply into the essential notions at the core of distant times. The Croatian Glagolitic version is largely successful in solving the demanding literary interpretations, maintaining to the extent possible the abstract/concrete balance, by which it follows the Scriptural tradition of textual transmission. The major deviation from the original is seen when the mythological animals of the early Orient and in question, since they largely belong to an abstract category that, because of its notional elusiveness, is difficult to transpose to another environment. This is also one of the rare instances in which the biblical rule of the abstract and the concrete is not respected, since the laws of translation have not permitted this back from the time of the Slavic Apostles. INterpretational licence and textual adaptations do not disrupt the meanings but merely confirm the finely honed skills as translators of the Mediaeval Croatian Glagolists (Zaradja Kiš 2003:129-142), and, particulary, their highly professional approach to the textual adaptation of the elements of early civilisations. |

Sažetak: | Actualisation of the snake myth, or: "Is it worthwhile to weep for Bosnia"? : the paper analyses Ivo Andrić's story 'The snake' form the collection of his short stories 'Children'. The zoo-symbolism in the story is examined from various aspects (symbolic, mythical, archetyopal, historical, cultural, anthropological, traditional and regional) which are interwined in its narratologial scheme. The 'Snake' is a modern-day myth about a snake with allegorical and moralizing characteristics. Its origins can be found in the bestiary of the popular medieval literary genre, which the author transforms by his modern treatment of the subject. |

Sažetak: | Croatian literary cats - proposal for a catalogue : cat as literary motif entered Croatian literature comparatively lare, since the overall socio-historical development did not leave much space for ether idle or metaphysical speculations about animals. Asd its subtitle suggests, the article identifies Croatian cat poems and presents two translations of the famous poem 'the namiong of cat' by T. S. Eliot. Tha author argues that ludic discourse can flourich only in societies with firmly established urban stratum which have historically developed a specific 'leisure cultre'. Renowned writers of the so-called 'Krugovi' generation (born mostly in late 1920s-early 1930s), some of them also accomplished linguists and translators such as Ivan Slamnig and Antun Šoljan, wrote witty cat poems in the 1980s. The cat motif appears more frequently in Croatian literature for children, altough some of the best contributors may also be listed under the ludic heading in the 'literature for adults', such as those by Luko Paljetak. |

Coeetzee's 'The life of animals' is not, in fact, aimed at our everyday behaviour towards animals, but at the philosophical transgression in relation to animals. the animalistic, zoophyllic appeal to feelings, the arousal and conceptualistion of empathy with animals... |

Sažetak: | Michel de Montaigne's human fauna : This contribution is an analytical commentary of Michel de Montaigne's 'Apology of Raimond Sebond'. Honoured by 20th century's authors (Barthes, Butor, Todorov) as the anticipator of postmodern discouorsive forms and philosophical topics, if not of its actual epistemological and cultural relativism, Montaigne in his essay devoted to the animals demonstrates also an affinity with current cultural animalistic interests. By its witty and consistent reversal of an implicit hierarchy between human and animal instinctive, emoptional and dognitive capacities, the essay is close to other "relativistic" writings of this renaissance philosopher, particularly those concerning distant, "cannibalistic" cultures, which the author compares to the European ones inorder precisely to make the latter appear "exotic" |

Sažetak: | Fauna in Držić's pastorals : the focus of attention of this text lies in the targeted reading of Marin Držić's three pastorals. Tirena, Venera and Adon, and Grižula. Targeted reading is determined by research into the animal word in the cited texts, with the comment that it was prompted by Rešetar's classification of Držić's works into three groups in relation to the criterion of the presence / absence in them of literary language and/or popular speech. In relation to this criterion Rešetar differentiated "purely serious work" from "the partly serious and partly jocular pastoral in verse and prose" and "the purely jocular comedies". Our target readin of Držić's "serious works" confirmed Rešetar's overall view of Držić's work, but it should be added that a stratified category of seriousness was undovered in relation to the researched faunistic lexemes. Research into the animal world in the second group, into "the pratly serious and partly jocular pastoral in verse and prose", also confirmed Rešetar's cognition, althoough the information gained showed in a very clear and mathematically estimable manner how the seriousness of the pastoral-fairy world and the rural Wlach - type humour, and/or the way in which the particular faunistic lexemes were built up, and how and with which lexemes the interwoven nature and connection of these two antithetically placed worlds in the pastoral were achieved. Application of the same research methodology to the remaining third group of Držić's work ("purely jocular comedies") would probably arrive at similar results - faunistic lexemse and their connotations contribute to the increased complexity and interwoven nature of both their serious and laughter categories. |

Sažetak: | animal names in slang : The article deals with animal names in slang In that kind of language, their newly acquired meanings, largely metaphoric, span from human physical and mental notation and psychic characteristics, mostly according to visual similarity with somephysical characteristic, and the already known characteristics of particular animal species. An important feature in their physical characteristics is roughness and cruelty and the desire to deride soomebody. What matters most in both categories is that nouns are given an adjectival meaning. Many animal names in sland denote the male and female sex and arts of the body and the male and female sexual organs. The names given to animal habitata are often pajoratively transposed to those of humans nad, since novelty and trendiness play an importand role in the life of young people, this is also seen in slang as well as in language, because they constantly seek for new modes of ecpression. Animal names anre also given to cars and motorcycles. If we exempt the last category, it is clear primarly that animal names are realtied to Humankind, which is interesting since human beings are becoming more estranged from Nature and since Humankind lives far less with it. It is obvious that soome kind of connection still exist, but it differs from that of popular mythology and the rural way of life, when the names of particular animals had greater importance and when they cooncealed more meaning and when animals were taboo. Today's connection in slang argely reduces to visual association and the desire for stylistic expression and irony and ridicule. |
