Sažetak:Tolerancija ili snošljivost je pojam koji se koristi u najrazličitije svrhe, od kojih mnoge nisu usmjerene poticanju tolerancije, već upravo njezinu zatiranju ili obezvrjeđivanju. Netolerantni ljudi često govore o toleranciji, naglašavajući nužnost njezinih granica i ističući na taj način opravdanost netolerancije koju šire. Ljudi koji se nerado određuju prema pojavama i događajima u društvu najčešće za sebe kažu da su tolerantni, koristeći tako toleranciju kao štit iza kojeg mogu ustrajati u svojoj neopredijeljenosti. Ekstremisti svih boja, vrsta i jakosti često govore o toleranicji kao nedostatku koji imaju slabi i neodlučni ljudi, ocrnjujući tako i svoje bližnje i sam pojam snošljivosti. Ima i dobrih, religioznih ljudi, čija tolerancija zaista nema granica, jer i u povodu uvrede i prijetnje pružaju drugi obraz. Ni oni ne doprinose "ugledu" tolerancije, jer učinak njihova ponašanja najčešće nije povoljan za njih, ni za njihove bližnje, a ni za zajednicu u kojoj žive. Netko pametan jednom je upozorio ljude na opasnost primjene uzrečice "Pametniji popušta", rekavši: "To znači da budale vladaju". Parafraziranjem tog upozorenja mogli bismo ustvrditi da kad "tolerantniji popušta" tada "netolerantni vladaju". Sama činjenica da je tome zaista tako mogla bi biti dovoljan, ali ne i jedini razlog za bavljenje tolerancijom.

Sažetak:(from the preface) Even a passing interest in daily news events confirms that violent crime, disasters, serious accidents, war, and other forms of traumatic events occur frequently and with great impact upon individuals, families, and communities. On a more scientific note, extant research studies have confirmed several crucial facts regarding the nature of traumatic events. These facts include: (1) that traumatic events occur frequently, impacting large numbers of people; (2) that exposure to traumatic events substantially increases the risk of several serious mental health problems; and (3) that it is possible to limit the impact of traumatic events through the application of prevention, assessment, and treatment strategies. This volume translates extant scientific knowledge concerning traumatic events and mental health into state-of-the-art prevention, assessment, and treatment activities for mental health professionals among whom intervention is their daily bread. This volume is intended to further inform mental health practitioners regarding: (1) the high prevalence of traumatic events; (2) the types of psychosocial problems associated with traumatic events; and (3) prevention, assessment, and treatment (psychosocial and biological) strategies available to alleviate trauma-engendered suffering. Sažetak:This book is the third in a series of handbooks sponsored by the International Society of Political Psychology, following the Handbook of Political Psychology (1973) and Political Psychology: Contemporary Problems and Issues (1986). The authors and editors are distinguished international political scientists, psychologists, and sociologists. In sum, the editors have organized a wide-ranging reference work, with generally helpful literature reviews, although some authors focus on their own research programs. Mostly the chapters tend to be stronger on descriptive reviews of literatures than on sharply identifying gaps in knowledge and providing directions for specific future research, although some chapters do a nice job of laying out future research agendas. Some chapters also seem to give equal weight to studies with strong and weak research designs. The volume is not entirely successful in bridging the elite/mass divide in studies of political psychology (see, however, the effort by McGraw in chapter 12, as well as that of Klandermans in chapter 19). Certainly more needs to be said in political psychology about the interaction of elites and masses, such as the collective or aggregate consequences of individual beliefs and opinions, or the consequences of elite actions for publics. Common themes include the role of threat in producing psychological effects among both elite and mass as well as the need to bring together emotion and cognition in explaining political behavior. Clearly there remains much to be done in political psychology, although the scope of research done thus far is impressive.

Sažetak:Tolerancija ili snošljivost je pojam koji se koristi u najrazličitije svrhe, od kojih mnoge nisu usmjerene poticanju tolerancije, već upravo njezinu zatiranju ili obezvrjeđivanju. Netolerantni ljudi često govore o toleranciji, naglašavajući nužnost njezinih granica i ističući na taj način opravdanost netolerancije koju šire. Ljudi koji se nerado određuju prema pojavama i događajima u društvu najčešće za sebe kažu da su tolerantni, koristeći tako toleranciju kao štit iza kojeg mogu ustrajati u svojoj neopredijeljenosti. Ekstremisti svih boja, vrsta i jakosti često govore o toleranicji kao nedostatku koji imaju slabi i neodlučni ljudi, ocrnjujući tako i svoje bližnje i sam pojam snošljivosti. Ima i dobrih, religioznih ljudi, čija tolerancija zaista nema granica, jer i u povodu uvrede i prijetnje pružaju drugi obraz. Ni oni ne doprinose "ugledu" tolerancije, jer učinak njihova ponašanja najčešće nije povoljan za njih, ni za njihove bližnje, a ni za zajednicu u kojoj žive. Netko pametan jednom je upozorio ljude na opasnost primjene uzrečice "Pametniji popušta", rekavši: "To znači da budale vladaju". Parafraziranjem tog upozorenja mogli bismo ustvrditi da kad "tolerantniji popušta" tada "netolerantni vladaju". Sama činjenica da je tome zaista tako mogla bi biti dovoljan, ali ne i jedini razlog za bavljenje tolerancijom.

Sažetak:Psihologija pamćenja i učenja ili što ste oduvijek željeli znati o pamćenju i učenju, zaboravljanju, rastresenosti, ispitima ... a niste se usudili pitati. Parafraza naslova čuvenog filma Woodyja Allena može se činiti šaljivom, ali sadržaj knjige nije ni najmanje šaljiv. Namjera je autora objasniti širokom krugu čitatelja svu složenost fenomena pamćenja kako bismo ga mogli što djelotvornije upotrijebiti. Ispravno i učinkovito korištenje sposobnosti pamćenja jedan je od najvažnijih preduvjeta uspješnog odgovaranja na sve veće zahtjeve okoline u kojoj živimo. Stara poslovica kaže da čovjek vrijedi onoliko koliko zna. Poštujući ovu mudrost, u knjizi se nastojalo što manje govoriti o već dobro poznatim činjenicama pa je veći dio sadržaja posvećen najnovijim spoznajama koje su dosad bile teže dostupne širem krugu čitatelja. Raščlanjujući raznolikost zastupljenih tema opravdano se smije pretpostaviti da će većina čitatelja, bez obzira na svoje predznanje, moći u ovom tekstu pronaći poneko zrno znanja i za sebe. Vrijedna odlika knjige je i način prezentiranja materijala (obilje prikazanih istraživanja, kao i vježbi i primjera, vrlo duhovite i ilustrativne uvodne napomene i slike). Grafički je predložen niz dobrih rješenja koja najvažnije dijelove teksta čine perceptivno istaknutim. Na taj način ne samo što se ostvaruje bolje učenje i pamćenje obrađenog problema, već se i u velikoj mjeri uspijeva održati visoka razina pozornosti čitatelja. 4 izdanja u 8 godina potvrđuju odlike ovog udžbenika i posebnost autorova pristupa.

Sažetak:With traumatic stress an increasing global challenge, the U.N., the NGO community and governments must take into account the psychological aftermath of large-scale catastrophes and individual or group violence. Trauma Interventions in War and Peace is a volume created to address this global perspective, and as such it provides a conceptual framework for interventions in the wake of abuse, torture, war, and disaster on individual, local, regional, and international levels. To be useful to both practitioners and policy makers, the book identifies model programs that can be implemented at every level. These programs vary in target and intensity to include social policy, safety programs, public education, coordination, capacity building, training, self-help, counseling, and clinical intervention. A core group of chapters covers the general concepts of traumatic stress, intervention, and social deprivation, while others focus on specific traumatic events like refugees and child abuse in peacetime, each addressing the scope of the problem, reactions to the traumatic stressor, intervention issues, and recommendations. One whole chapter is devoted to caregiver reactions. Special features of the book are the integration of cultural, gender, poverty, and marginalization issues into each discussion, as well as the contributions of internationally noted academic and professional experts. U.N. and NGO personnel provided input and feedback on each chapter to provide the best working guidelines available for those responding to trauma around the world.

Sažetak:(from the publicity materials) In Personality-Guided Relational Therapy author Jeffrey J. Magnavita demonstrates how personality theory guides his approach to psychotherapy. His empirically founded new model provides a flexible and evolving theory and approach to therapy that draws from more than a century of developments in the field of psychology. This book reconciles and integrates several theoretical viewpoints, enabling clinicians to conceptualize clinical syndromes by understanding the complex interplay of elements from the biopsychosocial model. The originating concept underlying the series may be traced to Henry Murray's seminal proposal in his 1938 volume, "Explorations in Personality", in which he advanced a new field of study termed personology. It took its contemporary form in a work of the series editor, Theodore Millon, PhD, DSc, published in 1999 under the title "Personality-Guided Therapy". This portion of the Series, as its title indicates, addresses the use of personality-guided behavior therapy.

Sažetak:In "Concepts, Kinds, and Cognitive Development," Frank Keil develops a coherent account of how concepts and word meanings develop in children, adding to our understanding of the representational nature of concepts and work meanings at all ages. Keil argues that it is impossible to adequately understand the nature of conceptual representation without also considering the issue of learning. Sažetak:In this textbook on the physiology of vision, Buser and Imbert synthesize the data in the field, proceeding from the biophysics of retinal receptors to processing in the visual areas of the cortex. Although the focus is on mammalian studies, some data from comparative physiology are included. In just five chapters the authors cover the structure and organization of the retina, the physical characteristics of visual stimuli, the psychophysical laws of visual sensation (absolute thresholds, retinal adaptation, visual acuity, temporal resolution, movement perception, color vision, and stereopsis), the genesis and elaboration of signals in the retina, and mechanisms in the central visual pathways.

Sažetak:(from the foreword) Attention in Vision: Perception, Communication, and Action is a research monograph presenting a selective review of empirical findings on visual attention and a new theoretical account of the findings. The present book by Van der Heijden builds on his previous works. The basic assumption that the perceptual categorisation system is unlimited in processing capacity is more or less taken for granted rather than argued anew. SLAM is reviewed, but the focus is on higher-order control processes and overarching theoretical issues. In the terminology used in the book, Van der Heijden attempts to explain how the Intending Mind uses Visual Perception for generating propositions (in report tasks) and moving the body (act tasks) in the physical world. Inspired by Turing's description of a universal machine, the Intending Mind is explicated as a sequence of states in an intentional machine. In report tasks, the Intending Mind goes through successive cycles of selecting an object (filtering) and determining the value of an attribute to be reported (pigeon-holing). In act tasks, the Intending Mind goes through successive cycles of selecting an object and extracting those parameters of the object that are needed for action. Complex behaviour is generated by organising such cycles hierarchically. The overall structure of the book is exceedingly clear and logical.

Sažetak:Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934), whose work was until recently known only to a small circle of Western psychologists, is now viewed as 'the Mozart of psychology' and one of the major theorists of twentieth-century social science. Alex Kozulin, translator of his work and distinguished Russian-American psychologist, has written a major intellectual biography about Vygotsky's life; his psychological theory of language, thought and development; and the posthumous life of his ideas. Kozulin's biography of Vygotsky reflects many of the conflicts of twentieth-century psychology--from the early battles between introspectionists and reflexologists to the current argument concerning the cultural and social, rather than natural, construction of the human mind. Sažetak:Bez boljeg poznavanja socijalne psihologije, sociologije, biokemije i drugih znanosti nije moguće uspješno rješavati zdravstvene probleme, pa su se javile tzv. "bihevioralna medicina" i "psihosomatska medicina", a najnoviji trend, nastao iz razvoja ovih novih disciplina, jest suvremena "zdravstvena psihologija". Psihosocijalne pojavnosti zdravlja i bolesti, povećanje učinkovitosti preventivnih, dijagnostičkih, terapijskih i rehabilitacijskih aktivnosti primjenom psihologijskih spoznaja, humanizacija međuljudskih odnosa, posebno koncentracija na odnos između zdravstvenog osoblja i samog bolesnika, važnost psiholoških čimbenika (npr. stresa) u nastanku nekih bolesti - sve su to teme koje danas obuhvaća zdravstvena psihologija. Drugim riječima, prastara ideja nekih filozofa i liječnika, tj. ideja o jedinstvenosti tjelesnog i psihičkog, danas je u zdravstvenoj psihologiji ponovno uskrsnula. Ali ipak, razlika između onoga nekad i ovoga danas je velika: ono nekad bilo je rezultat spekulacije ili intuicije pojedinih mudrih liječnika ili filozofa, a ovo danas je rezultat znanosti, tj. dokazanih činjenica.

Sažetak:Knjiga razmatra dječju psihologiju (razdoblje od začeća do mladenaštva) s gledišta triju glavnih orijentacija: kognitivno-razvojnog pristupa, pristupa okoline i učenja i etološkog pristupa. Obrađene su temeljne zakonitosti razvoja djeteta, na općoj razini.
