Sažetak: | Presents 2 competing models of psychotherapy--the medical model, which focuses on the specificity of treatments, and the contextual model, which emphasizes the commonality among therapies. Research on psychotherapy is reviewed, and the commonly held view that the benefits of psychotherapy are derived from the specific ingredients contained in a given treatment is disputed. The author reviews the literature related to the absolute efficacy of psychotherapy, relative efficacy of various treatments, specificity of ingredients contained in established therapies, effects due to common factors such as the working alliance, adherence and allegiance to the therapeutic protocol, and effects that are produced by different therapists. It is argued that in each case, the evidence convincingly corroborates the contextual model and disconfirms the prevailing medical model. Implications of accepting the contextual model and rejecting the medical model are discussed. |

Sažetak: | This summation of Yalom's life thinking on the art of psychotherapy, presented in the form of 85 tips, is filled with personal techniques and clinical anecdotes. Yalom, who has 45 yrs of clinical experience, addresses the nature of the therapist-patient relationship, explores the ultimate concerns of death, the meaning of life, and freedom (encompassing responsibility and decisions), and issues that arise in the everyday conduct of therapy. He also discusses the role of dreams and the hazards and privileges of being a therapist. Some of his more controversial suggestions include (1) let the patient matter to you, (2) use your own feelings, (3) create a new therapy for each patient, (4) acknowledge your errors with the patient, and (5) avoid diagnosis. Yalom worries that the field of psychiatry is in a state of crisis--a crisis which will adversely affect the next generation of therapists and patients. From his perspective, the economically driven health-care system threatens the existence of extensive and thoughtful psychotherapy. |

Sažetak: | Among the forces calling attention to diversity in the workplace are the changing nature of the workforce, globalization of labor and customer markets, and organizational restructurings, such as mergers and joint ventures, which bring diverse corporate cultures together. Most firms, however, are only beginning to evaluate and adjust policies that were originally designed for yesterday's more homogeneous workforce. The large-scale organizational changes attracting attention are, for now, the exception to the rule, but they do present examples of what can be accomplished. Toward that end, this volume describes how nine prominent organizations have responded to the challenge. Featuring descriptive case studies from such firms as Xerox, Digital Equipment, Pacific Bell, American Express, Coopers & Lybrand, and Pepsi-Cola International, it covers international diversity and merging corporate cultures, as well as ethnic, gender, and lifestyle differences. Part I outlines the challenges of workforce diversity and demonstrates why it is a strategic imperative for businesses to successfully address these issues. The cases in Part II cover the systematic creation and assessment of demographically diverse workplaces in response to our changing society and to assure equal employment opportunity. Positive and negative reactions to such programs are discussed. Part III illustrates interventions designed to improve interpersonal relations between members of different groups via workshops and group activities. Part IV delineates alternative models for corporate involvement, including a centralized policy, an adaptable generalized policy, and a "bottom up" approach where localities develop their own solutions. Part V offers commentaries on the cases described. . . . Finally, general guidelines for diagnosis and action are offered to help organizations decide whether to alter their current approach to workplace diversity. Sažetak: | This second edition of Group Processes aims to deepen the understanding of the reader regarding the relationships within and between groups by means of three key ideas. First, groups are a source of social identity; our sense of who we are and what we are worth derives from our group memberships. Second, there is a constant tension in group life between its task and socio-emotional aspects; "getting on with the job" whilst also "getting on with people." Third, group dynamics are frequently governed by comparison processes, both within the group and between the ingroup and various outgroups. In this revised edition, Brown introduces readers to the major developments in the field of group processes. All the chapters were thoroughly updated and several new sections have been added. |
